Executive Advising

Why MBD and MBE?

MBD and MBE are used to increase profitability, productivity, quality, throughput, utilization of CAPEX and OPEX, staffing, and decrease time to market, cycle time, complexity, cost, labor, and waste just to name a few. MBE is a Lean value-based approach to business information and IP.

MBE Strategy

Properly understood, MBE allows you to maximize the value your organization obtains from your critical business information and IP, while decreasing the amount of information your organization creates, the cost of information, the burden and skills it imposes on your staff and HR dept.

Properly implemented, MBE allows us to automate information creation and use, to remove historical information-related baggage that overwhelms your staff and drives significant waste and inefficiency. Most people see these problems as just how it is — they don’t understand there’s a better way.

Most companies start down the path of MBD and MBE only to struggle, flail, stall, and underachieve, missing their ROI targets, and leaving substantial opportunity on the table. Why? They don’t understand the MBD and MBE value proposition and how to develop the strategy, culture, and commitment needed to maximize returns. MBE is treated as a technical topic. Led by low-level technical staff, the MBE team develops technical solutions to technical problems, while we actually need to solve business problems.

If we want to succeed with MBE and obtain real business value from MBD, we need to change how we think about information, how we use information, how we work, our culture, our incentives, and our metrics.

If we don’t, we are wasting time, money, and resources, and decreasing goodwill as people grapple with change that doesn’t add enough value to overcome the emotional, cultural, and actual cost of change.

Bryan’s first work about MBD and MBE

Digital Data Sets and 3D Solid Modeling
Using Digital Data and Annotated Models as Design Deliverables

Bryan R. Fischer | Published 2008 IHS, Inc.

This early work focused on making sense of the ASME Y14.41 standard, adding additional explanations, guidance, rules, and examples, as well as providing coverage of assemblies long before they were included in the ASME Y14.41 and ISO 16792 standards.

This material presents a more traditional view of MBD, as it was written in 2007-2008. The material was originally chapter 26 of the IHS Global Drawing Requirements Manual, 11th ed.

Other Notable Works by Bryan R. Fischer

  • Various GD&T books and manuals
  • Magazine articles about GD&T, STEP, MBD, and STEP

MBE and Digital Transformation

We offer unparalleled leadership, guidance, and assistance to clients in all areas and phases of MBD and MBE. We can help you from your first steps toward MBD and MBE to becoming a fine-tuned operation.

The 10 Steps of Transformation™ help you understand the inefficiencies of your current state, where you are today, where you can be tomorrow, and how to get there.

Many companies play follow-the-leader with MBE, but they don’t realize that the leader isn’t leading. Don’t just copy what another company says they’re doing.

Set goals that drive significant business value.

Our Approach

Our multi-step transformation process helps you transform your organization, your culture, your goals, and how you work, focusing on how you create and use information, increasing its value and reducing the cost and burden it imposes.

We prepare you to succeed with MBD and MBE

We focus on helping you understand what is possible, where you are, where you can be, and how to get there.

We help you focus on the big picture, on business strategy, corporate culture, and progress, how to obtain value while minimizing the cost and pain of change. Most MBE implementations merely focus on technical details. While we also address technical details of MBD and MBE (we’re experts in the details, we wrote the book!), winning or losing with MBE isn’t a technical problem – it’s a business problem.

We offer training courses, workshops, and mentoring before, during, and after MBE transformation projects.

  • Kickoff training empowers leaders and staff with an updated value- driven understanding of MBD and MBE, what’s possible, what’s in the way, and how to succeed, what we call Rebaselining
  • In-project training empowers the project team and participants, facilitating a smooth path to deployment and rollout
  • Post-rollout training empowers everyone across the organization and supply chain who must understand, accept, and use the new work methods

Training courses and workshops are generally 16-20-hours long, but can be shorter or longer depending on a number of factors. We offer training for MBD, MBE, and a combination of both topics.

Our training is based on our materials and references applicable standards.

To complement our MBD and MBE training, Bryan’s other company offers GD&T and ISO GPS training. No one else has the expertise and experience to help you understand and optimize the transition from traditional engineering product definition practices like GD&T and their effect on manufacturing, quality, and other organizations and MBD and MBE.

How do you want to work?

Mbe Gauge Low

While CAD and 3D models are part of MBD and MBE, MBD and MBE are not just about CAD and 3D models.

Mbe Gauge Med

MBD and MBE are about how you work, about how you create and use information, and how to do so in the most efficient manner possible.

Mbe Gauge High

MBD and MBE are about obtaining the greatest value from your work and your information for the lowest cost.
